The Sober Companion by Emily Ford Spotlight and Reviews

sober The Sober Companion

Fans of True Blood and Elementary can have their cake and eat it too. Emily Ford presents a classy, clever, unique love story set in a society still raw from the Human-Vampire War of the 1960’s. Human oppression of vampires is considered the new norm, but things begin to change when a powerful group of live blood drinkers plan a political upheaval of the status quo.

For Vampire-Americans to become legal citizens in America, they must successfully complete 6 months of live blood rehab followed by 6 months of 24/7 observation by a sober companion.

Elias Alexander, a legendary thousand year-old vampire of celebrity status, decides to give up his illegal vampire lifestyle in order to fit in to American society. After spending his entire life waiting for his true love, Elizabeth, to continually reincarnate due to a witch’s curse, only to keep dying in her 25th year of life, Eli is losing hope that he will ever be able to hold on to her permanently.

Eric Wayne claims to hate vampires and is court ordered to work as a sober companion to avoid prison time for his violent act against one. Hiding his own self-destructive addiction, he is assigned to the celebrity vampire who he comes to admire as they develop a deep bond that transcends mere friendship.

When Eli determines Eric to be the modern day reincarnation of Elizabeth, he is faced with the most difficult decision of his life. He must choose either to save a mortally wounded Eric by turning him into a vampire, or to let him die in hopes Elizabeth will reincarnate again in her original form.

The definition of love is put to the ultimate test as Eli and Eric struggle to fight for what is right amid a hostile world of oppression and corruption, meanwhile learning to depend on each other to survive.

OMG OMG OMG — Emily Ford has done it again!!! You ask “What has she done?” — well, she has written another AWESOME book!!!

Now – this is not a typical vampire novel – oh NO NO NO NO!!!! This is a vampire novel that has all kinds of twists and turns woven into it!!! The story starts out with you being introduced to Elias Alexander – who is one of the oldest vampires in existence. While being introduced to Eli, we are also learning how the world is accepting vampires and the things that are being done to make it possible for them to coexist with humans. I don’t write spoilers — so I will stop right there in regards to telling you what happens — heck, reading what is happening without any fore warning makes for a better read!!! And believe me – this is an awesome read!!! You will find that you just do NOT want to put this book down for anything!!! And just when you think that you have figured out where Emily is taking the storyline — HA HA HA – CLIFFHANGER!!!!

I went into this book totally blind. Not reading any blurbs, reviews or descriptions. I had no idea what to expect, but I did know that I’ve never been disappointed by Emily Ford, even though she’s a relatively new author to me. Wow! That about sums up my feelings on this book. I loved the whole concept of the storyline from the beginning and I hate that I have to wait for book two!

I started this book and didn’t put it down until I finished. Super interesting read. I really loved that the modern but also the history of all the years of Eli. The characters were fantastic. The connections and emotions that connected them, the secrets that you wanted to find out. I had to keep reading to find out.
I have read all of Emily’s books and have really come to enjoy them. This has become one of my favorite books. I really loves that though it is about a vampire and the world trying to find a way to co-exist it also feels very surreal. I really look forward to the next book and what other adventures are in store for Eli and Eric and the rest of their companions.
The flow of the story really worked well too. It wasn’t rushed and didn’t feel like it dragged on at all either. Everything worked where it needed to work. It has flashbacks of Eli and has long lost love Elizabeth where it worked and helped get a better understanding on Eli. I loved Eli’s best friend Cicero, he was a great add to the story. He added humor and seriousness to the story when needed.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book and highly recommend this book. I really cannot wait until the next book.
